Winter Break

I just left Denver yesterday and I am now in El Paso, TX and I am visiting the cutest baby ever my cousin Eloise who is just 4 months old and I've never seen her before. She is very cute and her smile is adorable. She has not grown teeth yet but she likes to bite on her hands. I hope to see you guys when we return from winter break in January 2011. Firefighters fight alot of land fires. Six-thousand acres of land got destroyed. Trees, grass,and houses got destroyed. There was alot of different kinds of firefighters. After the fire, the ground was black. And that is what they do on land.

Science Inquiry

Third and Fourth graders, you have been studying Life Cycles in Science.  Throughout the unit, you have asked amazing questions that show your curiosity and desire to learn more.  We are constantly going through our 7-step "Doing Science" process:  Ask a Question, Make a Prediction, Make a Plan, Collect Data (charts, tables, drawings etc.), Make a Claim based on observations and Draw Conclusions.

What about the 7th step???  It is Reflecting and Asking New Questions.  This is your opportunity to ask a new question based on your learning.  The only limitations are that the questions must be related to Life Cycles, and it needs to be a question that we can answer considering the resources that we have available to use.

I have learned that it is not called the for mile fire because it is four miles. It is actually in the four mile canyon,and that 1,000 or more has drove away in a car. I am still wondering if the fire is still going on. And if any one got heart.

The Zoo is Expanding

Thanks to the generosity of a fourth grade parent, we now have a tarantula in our room!  He is a Chilean Rose Hair, just like Rosie at the Butterfly Pavilion.  Now I need your help again.  What do I need to know about this little guy?  What do we feed him and how often?  I am hearing that he eats crickets twice a week.  What does he need for a good habitat?  I read that a 5-gallon aquarium with a screen top is ideal.  I found a good website here if you would like to do some reading.

Hello, I just got back from the King Tut exhibit! It was really cool! I saw lots of fascinating statues of kings and queens of Egypt. I saw Tut's chair and jewelry. I learned that he died at the age of nineteen. The most interesting things to me were the ancient, stone toilet seat,(it looked quite big for a toilet seat) and the solid gold sandals. I had a great time at the King Tut exhibit today,GA

Weekend Summaries

Third and fourth grade students have been discussing summarizing. We don't only summarize in reading, but we summarize often in our everyday lives. We summarize when describing our days, telling about movies or books, and talking about our lives with other people. No one wants to hear every detail.

Poseidon the Turtle!

We have a new addition to Mr. Lewis' classroom... a box turtle named Poseidon.  She is 15 years old, loves to eat mealworms and hang out under a warm lamp.  Poseidon comes courtesy of a teacher who was going overseas for a while and needed a home for the reptile.  A third grade parent emailed me a couple of weeks ago, and I thought she would be a great addition to our classroom, especially since we are currently studying life cycles.  My supply managers in third and fourth grade will be responsible for feeding her and cleaning her tank.  If you are interested in helping us by providing food for Poseidon, you can visit our class wiki.  In addition to mealworms, she likes berries and lettuce.

This is the class blog for Mr. Lewis and Ms. Trumbull's classes.  This blog will be a place where students can show their work in literacy, science, social studies and math.  Students will be challenged to take what they learn and write about it on this blog so that their ideas can be shared with others: parents, experts, other students. After posting, students should check back on their posts to see who has commented. Comments from the "outside" give students an opportunity to continue to reflect on their work and revise their understanding of their ideas. They can truly have an online conversation about their ideas.

We have a class wiki as well.  It is an informational site where you can find lots of resources for all subject areas.  It also serves as a collaborative space where students can contribute their ideas to a larger question.  Students worked on a collaborative reading response on the literacy page. On the math page they created VoiceThreads to narrate their thinking on math problems.

Ecosystems Project Reflection

This weekend I went skiing in Loveland with my cousin, my uncle, my parents, and my brother. At first we only skied on green runs. Then, we ate lunch we had turkey sandwitches , soda, and cookies.After that, we went on a blue run. It was so fun! First there was a steep part. Then, we went into the trees. Next, we went on a big jump. Finally, back to the ski lift. We did that run over and over again until the last run. We were the very last people to ski on that mountain. It was so fun!

Two kids named Jack and Annie find a hotel with a piano that plays all by itself because of a ghost named Lonesome Luke.After that they find a really nice cowboy named Slim.Slim is as nice as ever.I love this story because it really puts a picture in my mind about Lonesome Luke.I think you should read this story to. I'm reading a book called Tales of the Fourth Grade Nothing by Judy Blume. I'm going to make a new ending to it. My new ending is going to be when Fudge, Peter's little crazy brother, gets a job, and his job will be a Principal. Every morning he is going to announce today is all day recces day! So everyone will go outside and play all day long! Then he'll do that almost every day of the week! That's what my new ending is!

In the book Lost And Found, there are two boys named Jay and Ray, and they are both twins and look very much alike except for one little freckle on Ray's right ankle.Jay and Ray moved a long way from Denver.On the first few days of school Ray stayed home sick.While at school Rays things are lost and no one knows about Ray except for Jay.Jay and Ray both have a plan. Their plan is Jay will stay home sick while Ray will be at school pretending to be Jay. Well thats all i read so far. I would highly recommend this book. SH

My favorite part in The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey is when the children (Kate, Contence, Sticky, and Reynie) meet up with some Ten Men (men that have 10 different ways to hurt you) in their hotel room. That is my favorite part because of how brave the children were. Contence wouldn't let go of the note Mr. Benedict gave her and Kate bit the ten man on the arm and poured lemon juice in his eyes! That was my favorite part in the book The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey.

So far I'm reading Maggie & Max,and so far my favorite part is when Charles' older sister,Lizzie , stuck her tongue out at Charles probably because she was jealous because her brother was having a lot of fun. So after Lizzie stuck her tongue out, Charles stuck his tongue back at Lizzie. Then Lizzie puts her pinkies in the corner of her mouth and makes a jack-o-lantern face at Charles. So Charles did the same back at Lizzie. But Charles wanted to do a different face like with cross eyes and a dangling tongue at Lizzie.Then he heard his mom's voice calling for him.So he couldn't do the face at Lizzie.Thats what my favorite part is in Maggie & Max. I'm reading Fudge-A-Mania By Judy Blume. I predict next what will happen in the story is, Pete and his best friend Jimmy Fargo are going to pull a prank on Shelia Tubman Pete's '' enemy''. Also the prank that there going to do to her is get Pete's dog Turtle and put him in Shelia's face cause she thinks, that's the most disgusting dog in the world like she thinks of every orther dog. Shelia also has her own dog and she doesn't think hers is disgusting. Then since theres a wall separating there summer houses, shes going to set up a play date with Pete's 3 year old sister with out him knowing. That what i predict what will happen next in the story.

I am reading a book called Fantastic Mr. Fox and my favorite part of the book is when Mr. Fox goes out in the night to get dinner ,but he doesn't make it because Farmer Boggis, Farmer Bunce ,and Farmer Bean are hiding behind trees and trying to be as quiet as possible. When Mr. Fox got closer they started to shoot. They shot his tail off by hiding behind trees ,and shooting when Mr. fox got closer. Then Mr. Fox started to run as fast as he could to get back into his hole. He almost made it ,but when the three Farmers went to the hole all they found was Mr. Foxes tail. Not anything else. That is my favorite part because I think that it is kind of interesting that they shoot off his tail ,but not anything else.

The book I am reading is called Ghost Girl, and it all begins when a girl named Charlotte no older than fourteen chokes on a gummy bear in the middle of class and dies's. Yes it's sad. but she gets to start a new life in after life, get a fresh start. The only bad thing was she didn't know who her best friends were, but she positive she needed them. That is what I think the author wants us to learn from this story is that every body needs friends. They're always there for you when you're feeling down. Friends are very important.

My favorite part in Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban was when Harry
was playing quidditch ,and he went high into the air ,and into the clouds and one of the clouds
looked like the grim. This is something that is not good for Harry. Then the dementors came,
it was bad enough for Harry to see the grim . When ever Harry sees a dementor
he can hear his mother dying from Voldmort. Let me tell you about Voldmort.
He is trying to kill Harry because when Harry was a baby Voldmot could not kill Harry
and he striped him from his powers and that's why it is my favorite part .

I'm reading The Lightning Theif. The main character is Percy Jackson, and Percy is really brave because he fought a mystical creature called a minatore witch is half human, and half buffalo. Percy is a nice kid because, he took Grover under his wing, and now there best friends,or should I say Grover took Percy under his wing because Percy is in great danger and Grover knows it.Grover is a satyer! Percy is kind of a nobody because he dosn't have very many friends(besides Grover.) I would highly reccomend this book to girls and boys.

A Decision the Main Character Has Had to Make.

The book I'm reading is called The Mysterious Benedict Society and The Perilous Journey. A decision the main character has had to make was to either keep the radio (walkie talkie) or to get rid of it. Reynie (the main character) chose to get rid of it. I think he made the right decision because on the ship (the one Reynie, Kate, Sticky, and Contence came to Lisbon on) there were people who owned diamonds, and the captain gave one to Reynie. Reynie thinks the captain is not trust worthy and is after him and his friends. Reynie also thinks the captain will tell the people who own the diamonds, say that he stole the diamonds and get Reynie in trouble. That is one decision the main character has had to make.

Next in Chasing Lincoln's killer I think soldiers and police will go after John Vilkes Booth. I think Booth will get hung or a worse way to die. Booth's gang will make it hard to get Booth.I think the soldiers will not give up,because it wasn't just any murder it was the president of the Untied states of America. Lincoln was killed with a 44.caliber pistol,and that is not how you treat the president.

Goose Egg by Dave Lobar is about a family that has a older brother and one little sister and a mom and a dad.One day the sister named Emma finds a goose in their back yard.The next day when the goose was normally chasing and biting Emma it was just sitting there.Emma soon found out that it was no ordinary goose egg it was sitting on it was a golden goose egg.So she excitedly went to go tell her brother Cliff.Then they both agreed to keep the egg a secret .Emma hid the egg in her bottom drawer in her room.But soon the eggs began to crack and out came a monster with sharp teeth.Emma had seen birds with sharp claws but not teeth.It was pouring rain out side so they desperately put the eggs out side to drown.Her brother was playing princess with her so he said "I could not find a pea so I used a egg."Soon the birds ripped through the matterss and searched for there next meal.I think that the authors message was to say that you should alawys think befor you act and Emma did not do that because she did not think about what could happen if it hurt her family.

I'm going to describe shell cottage from the book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Shell cottage has six rooms. First there's the bathroom it has blue and green walls a white sink,a blue bathtub and a green toilet.Then there's three bedrooms each one is smaller than the other. I the biggest room there's a brown wooden dresser, a blue mirror that's on top of the dresser, one king sized bed and two windows. In the next room there's a closet withe blue doors with three shelf's, one queen sized bed and one window.In the smallest of the rooms there's one twin bed , a window and a closet. Then there's the kitchen in the kitchen there's four cabinets, a sink and a stove.After that there's the dining room. The dining it's pretty crammed.Everything in there is wooden.Last but not lest the living room. The living room has one couch, a few chairs and a table. there you have it that's what shell cottage looks like .
