The Zoo is Expanding

Thanks to the generosity of a fourth grade parent, we now have a tarantula in our room!  He is a Chilean Rose Hair, just like Rosie at the Butterfly Pavilion.  Now I need your help again.  What do I need to know about this little guy?  What do we feed him and how often?  I am hearing that he eats crickets twice a week.  What does he need for a good habitat?  I read that a 5-gallon aquarium with a screen top is ideal.  I found a good website here if you would like to do some reading.

  1. How to handle your pet tarantula
If you decide to handle your tarantula you must be very careful. Your new pet requires very little care and being handled is not necessary for its physical needs. Your tarantula is probably better off not being held, but if you want to handle your spider there are a number of safe ways to do it.

  3. I read a little bit about the handling section, but personaly I feel the strongest need NOT to touch him. You should not let it go anywhere but your hands at least that's what the website read.

  4. Our new friend is adjusting well in his new home. He happily ate two crickets. He moves pretty quick when he's hungry! Kids and adults alike can rest assured that he can survive by himself over the weekend so there is no need for you to host him at your home... your welcome.

@BK, your wish is my command, there are pictures of our field trip on the Shutterfly page.

  5. I think we should name it HADES because I like the Greek god theme, and I am reading the Percy Jackson Series right now! Our Tarantula should eat only one or two crickets a week, but bigger spiders eat six crickets a week!

P.S. CAN WE PLEASE NAME IT HADES? PLEASE!

  7. I like we should name it harry. I think we should name it that because he is harry! I don't think we should name it hades because it is the name of the underworld. M.J.

  8. Name it "Senor Lewis". Hades is a horrible name because he was the God of the Underworld where the dead people lived but our Tarantula is alive!
