What is the Area of Your Skin?

It is said that you can approximate the area of your skin by figuring out the area of the outline of your hand and then multiplying that by 100.  In this post, students will be explaining the process they went through to calculate the area of their skin and commenting about whether they think this is a reasonable way to calculate it.

  2. I went through a process where I traced my hand on a grid. 15sq. cm. Then I multiplied It by 100.
I think the book is wrong because 1500 is too much.

  3. I figuerd out the area of my skin by tracing my hand by tracing my hand on 1 inch grid paper and counting the squares and multiplied it by 100 and got 1500. I don't think it'sa reasonable answer because when Mr.Lewis layed out all those square inches on the floor i saw how little it acctually was then I realized it wasn't a reasonable answer.

  5. When I went through the process of finding the area of my skin I traced my hand on a 1 inch grid paper and multiplied it by 100. The rule of thumb says that if you take the area of your hand and multiply it by 100 you get an estimate of how much skin you have.

  8. The out line of my hand is about 12 square inches. 12 times 100 is 1,200. Divide that by 144 and you get 8.3. I think this is ridiculous!
